80 year old Kanta Prasad, widely known for his “Baba Ka Dhaba” in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area, was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital night of 17th July following a suicide attempt.
Kanta Prasad was brought in an unconscious condition after he consumed alcohol and sleeping pills. Statement of his son has also been recorded.
The police said that they received a PCR call late on Thursday that a man, who attempted suicide, has arrived at the hospital. “Police rushed to the spot and found that he is Kanta Prasad. He is currently undergoing treatment. His wife informed the police that he had been depressed for the last few days,” a senior police officer informed.
According to his wife Prasad had to close the restaurant he opened in December last year and was back to his old roadside stall as the cost of running the new establishment was around Rs 1 lakh while his income was only about Rs 30,000.
Prasad and his “Baba Ka Dhaba” came into the limelight last year when a post on social media showing him crying because of his financial problems went viral, provoking overwhelming support in cash and in kind. He then opened a restaurant with the money received however his venture wasn’t a success.
“The restaurant did well in the beginning. After a while, customers stopped coming, and the expenses were a lot more than the income. I had to spend Rs 1 lakh to run the restaurant, but we were earning only Rs 30,000,” Prasad said, adding he is back at his old dhaba and is “happy” with it.
