Tokyo-bound Indian javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra won the bronze medal at the Kuortane Games in Finland on 26th July.

Neeraj Chopra’s 86.79m throw won him bronze behind world number one and 2017 world champion Johannes Vetter of Germany and London 2012 gold medallist Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago.

Neeraj Chopra threw an 83.12m in his first throw and improved it to 86.79m with his second attempt. Even though his remaining four throws were fouls he had done enough to bag the bronze.

None of the other competitors came even close to the top three with fourth-placed Granadian Anderson Peters managing 83.46m in his fourth attempt, which was the best of the rest. Peters was the only participant who managed all 6 legal throws.

Johannes Vetter took the first position by winning gold with a massive 93.59m throw, while Walcott’s 89.12m throw won him silver. Both Vetter and Walcott will be two of the big medal-favourites at the Tokyo 2020 men’s javelin throwing event.

Though Neeraj did not win gold in Finland, he gave his best performance in his European tour so far. He is one of India’s brightest medal prospects at the Tokyo Olympics
