Amidst concerns over a surge in dengue cases, Bengaluru has witnessed 172 reported instances of the disease within the past 13 days, as per data released by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). In response, the civic body has swiftly implemented precautionary measures to curb the spread of this vector-borne illness.
In light of National Dengue Day on May 16, BBMP Special Commissioner (Health) Suralkar Vikas Kishor revealed that the Health Department has mobilized four dedicated teams for each ward. Their tasks involve extensive insecticide spraying and fogging operations across the city.
Leveraging resources acquired during the COVID-19 pandemic, BBMP will deploy mist cannon machines for disinfectant spraying to combat the dengue menace. Mr. Suralkar emphasized the importance of awareness campaigns, targeting every ward, to educate citizens on mosquito-borne diseases and preventive measures. With the onset of the rainy season, BBMP’s focus is on eliminating stagnant water, a breeding ground for mosquitoes, from areas such as unused tyres, flower pots, and drains.
Additionally, BBMP personnel will conduct thorough inspections of households to identify and eradicate mosquito breeding sites, including cement tanks and coconut shells. This proactive approach aims to gather crucial data on breeding locations and the extent of the problem.
Community health workers, including ASHA workers and primary health center staff, have intensified efforts to detect dengue cases, particularly in vulnerable areas like slums. Meanwhile, BBMP plans to intensify awareness drives through social media, alongside distributing informational pamphlets and making public announcements via waste collection vehicles.
In the face of the dengue outbreak, Bengaluru remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguard public health, implementing comprehensive measures to mitigate the spread of the disease and protect its residents.
