The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated an innovative campaign aimed at raising awareness about mosquito control to address the rising cases of dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses.
Rising Illness Cases
In the first half of July, Mumbai reported a significant increase in dengue, leptospirosis, and H1N1 cases compared to the previous month. According to the BMC’s monsoon report, dengue cases surged to 165 between July 1 and July 15, up from just 93 in June. Leptospirosis cases also rose from 28 to 52, while H1N1 cases escalated from 10 in June to 53 in the first half of July.
The “Bhag Machchar Bhag” Campaign
In response to these alarming statistics, the BMC has launched the “Bhag Machchar Bhag” campaign, which promotes mosquito control strategies through short films and messages featuring popular celebrities from both Marathi and Hindi cinema. The campaign encourages residents to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, utilize mosquito nets, and wear protective clothing to mitigate the risks associated with these diseases.
Expert Insights
Dr. Manjusha Agarwal, a senior consultant in internal medicine at Gleneagles Hospital in Parel, noted an increase in dengue and H1N1 cases, averaging five to six cases per day since last week. She emphasized the importance of vaccinations available for both H1N1 and pneumonia, which can help prevent these illnesses. Dr. Agarwal particularly urged citizens over the age of 60, especially those with diabetes and other comorbidities, to receive the pneumonia vaccine, as dengue cases are expected to rise further in August and September.
Conclusion
The BMC’s proactive measures through the “Bhag Machchar Bhag” campaign highlight the need for community involvement in controlling mosquito populations and preventing disease outbreaks. By fostering awareness and promoting preventive actions, the campaign aims to protect the health of Mumbai’s residents during the monsoon season.
