Dhammika Niroshana, a former captain of the Sri Lanka Under-19 cricket team, has tragically lost his life at the age of 41 after being shot outside his residence in Ambalangoda. The incident occurred when an unidentified assailant opened fire, and local police are currently conducting an investigation to track down the shooter.
Niroshana, who leaves behind his wife and two children, had a notable cricket career that came to an early end when he retired from all forms of the game in 2004. Known for his fast-bowling capabilities, he also had the ability to contribute with the bat when needed. He made his Under-19 debut in 2000 and served as captain in 2002, leading the team during crucial tournaments.
Although Niroshana did not reach the senior national team, he played alongside several future stars of Sri Lankan cricket, including Angelo Mathews, Upul Tharanga, and Farveez Maharoof, both at the Under-19 level and in the first-class circuit. His contributions to teams like Chilaw Marians CC and Galle CC are fondly remembered by those in the cricketing community.
