The primary objective of the test flight was to execute a controlled re-entry of the upper section of the rocket, known as the ‘Ship’, and ensure a gentle touchdown in the Indian Ocean. The mission proved successful, as the Ship descended fully intact to the sea.

The splashdown procedure begins with the spacecraft’s re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere at high velocities, up to 27,000 kmph, protected by a heat shield to withstand intense frictional heat. Upon traversing the upper atmosphere, the spacecraft deploys parachutes to decelerate its descent.

Upon reaching the ocean’s surface, the spacecraft remains buoyant with the assistance of inflatable floatation collars, ensuring stability until recovery teams, often comprising naval vessels and helicopters, locate and retrieve the spacecraft and its crew.

Historically, splashdowns have been integral to space exploration since the early days, with programs such as Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo relying on this method for recovery. Apollo 11, the pioneering mission that landed humans on the Moon, concluded with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean in 1969.

Despite their safety advantages, including the soft landing surface provided by water and the vast recovery areas offered by oceans, splashdowns are not without risks. Challenges such as unpredictable ocean currents, adverse weather conditions, and the potential for post-splashdown complications necessitate meticulous planning and swift recovery efforts to ensure the safety of astronauts and the spacecraft.
