In a significant move, Israel has officially banned the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), citing its responsibility for the “murder of Indians,” particularly recalling the tragic events of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The ban coincides with the 15th anniversary of the attacks, symbolizing Israel’s commitment to combat terrorism.

The decision was not prompted by the Indian government; instead, the Israel Embassy in India issued a press release, confirming the completion of all necessary processes to add LeT to Israel’s list of unlawful terror organizations. Israel’s list includes groups actively operating against the nation or posing a threat to India, aligning with global designations by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) or the US State Department.

Highlighting Lashkar-e-Taiba as a “deadly” and “reprehensible” terror organization, Israel’s Defense and Foreign Affairs ministers collaborated to expedite the listing, emphasizing the need for a unified global front against terrorism. The statement expressed condolences to all victims of terrorism, including those affected by the Mumbai attacks, reinforcing solidarity for a peaceful future.

Notably, Israeli Ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, suggested that it might be time for India to designate Hamas as a terrorist organization officially. He referenced other nations, such as the United States, EU, Canada, and Australia, that have already taken this step. Gilon disclosed ongoing discussions with Indian authorities on the matter, clarifying that Israel wasn’t applying pressure but engaging in a dialogue.

While India’s Foreign Ministry had previously refrained from officially designating Hamas as a terrorist group, Ambassador Gilon emphasized that the conversations were part of an ongoing diplomatic exchange, with Israel respecting India’s decision-making process. The ambassador’s remarks raise the prospect of India considering a similar move against Hamas in the future, aligning with international efforts to combat global terrorism.
