In a diplomatic move, Japan has initiated direct communication with Houthi rebels responsible for hijacking the cargo ship, Galaxy Leader, in the Red Sea. The vessel, owned by an Israeli businessman and operated by a Japanese firm, was attacked by Yemeni rebels in response to perceived injustices in Gaza.

Tokyo, expressing strong condemnation for the ship’s seizure, is actively engaging with Israel and has urged concerned nations, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, to join efforts in persuading the rebels to release both the vessel and its hostages promptly.

Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa stated, “Our government will continue to take necessary measures in cooperation with the countries concerned while considering the evolving situation.” Japan’s diplomatic endeavors aim to secure the safe release of the hijacked ship and its crew, emphasizing a collaborative approach to address the complex geopolitical situation.
