Critically acclaimed actor Neena Gupta released her autobiography titled “Sach Kahun Toh” on 14th of June. The book is an honest tell-all tale about her life, chronicling her professional highs and personal lows. The book touches upon several milestones of Gupta’s life, from her unconventional pregnancy, single parenthood to a successful comeback in Bollywood.
Actor Kareena Kapoor Khan who launched the book said she doesn’t view the book as a document of Gupta’s “mistakes”, rather, a sincere effort to put forth a life “that has been lived with all heart.” Gupta revealed that she has been writing the autobiography for 20 years and would often wonder if people were even interested in reading about her.
The book addresses issues like casting couch, film industry politics, and also talks about what it takes for a young actor to survive without a godfather or guide. However there is one incidence from the book which has been gaining a lot of interest. Neena who had her daughter Masaba Gupta out of wedlock revealed in her autobiography that her close friend Satish Kaushik offered to marry her.
According to a review of Sach Kahun Toh published in Film Companion, when Neena was pregnant with Masaba, Satish came up with a proposition. He told her, “Don’t worry, if the child is born with dark skin, you can just say it’s mine and we’ll get married. Nobody will suspect a thing.”
However Neena Gupta raised her daughter, designer Masaba Gupta, as a single mother. Neena got pregnant while she was in a relationship with former cricketer Sir Viv Richards in the 1980s.
Earlier, in an interview, Neena had talked about having to ‘suffer a lot’ professionally because of the image that was created of her. Elaborating about it, she said, “Well that of a bold, strong woman who does things according to what she wants to do. And a strong woman means a negative woman in our films. I used to get all negative roles like a dominating woman in the household but I told them that I want a bechari woman role.”
“Also, discussions about having a child out of wedlock (referring to her daughter Masaba) went on and on and on. Wo child to woman ho gayi abhi bhi child hi bol rahe hain (People are still calling her child, even though she is a woman now),” she added.
Neena’s career got a fresh lease of life in 2018, with films such as Veere Di Wedding, Mulk and Badhaai Ho. She was most recently seen as the titular matriarch in the Netflix family drama Sardar Ka Grandson, co-starring Arjun Kapoor and Rakul Preet Singh. She was also seen alongside Masaba in the semi-autobiographical Netflix series, Masaba Masaba. A second season is in the works.
