In a rapid and decisive move, the Indian Navy has taken action to address a hijacking incident in the Arabian Sea involving a Malta-flagged commercial vessel, MV Ruen. The vessel, which was boarded by approximately six unknown individuals on December 14, issued a Mayday distress message on the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) portal, prompting immediate intervention.

Responding to the distress call, the Indian Navy deployed an anti-piracy patrol warship and aircraft to locate and assist MV Ruen. The naval aircraft conducted an overflight of the hijacked vessel on the early morning of December 15, and continuous monitoring has revealed that the ship is currently heading towards the coast of Somalia.

On December 16, the Indian Navy’s warship intercepted MV Ruen, effectively addressing the hijacking situation. Ongoing vigilance is being maintained, with close coordination involving other agencies and the Maritime Security Forces in the region.

A statement from the Defence Ministry affirmed the Indian Navy’s commitment to being a rapid and effective first responder in the region. The primary objective is to ensure the safety of merchant shipping, and this commitment is upheld through collaborative efforts with international partners and friendly foreign countries.

As the situation unfolds, the Indian Navy remains steadfast in its dedication to maritime security and the protection of vessels navigating the crucial waters of the Arabian Sea. The coordinated response highlights the proactive stance taken by Indian authorities to safeguard maritime interests and maintain the integrity of the region’s waterways.
