In a concerning development, Maharashtra has reported 13 new cases of COVID-19, all emerging from Mumbai, marking the first time in several months that the state has entered the two-digit realm for daily infections. This uptick in cases has prompted the Centre to issue a directive to states, urging heightened surveillance in light of the emergence of the new JN.1 variant of the coronavirus in the country.

Union Health Secretary Sudhansh Pant, in a letter to states, emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and proactive in monitoring the evolving COVID situation. Maharashtra, which has been at the forefront of the pandemic, now faces a fresh wave with the detection of these new cases.

The state’s latest report reveals that there are currently 24 active COVID cases, with 19 concentrated in Mumbai. All infected individuals are currently under home isolation, and there have been no reported hospitalizations. As the new JN.1 variant raises concerns about potential increased transmissibility, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further spread.

This recent surge in cases serves as a reminder of the importance of continued adherence to preventive measures and the necessity of an agile response to emerging variants. The public health machinery is on high alert, and efforts are underway to curb the spread and prevent the resurgence of the virus in the state.
