In a significant departure from the conventional school schedule, the Maharashtra government is considering a shift in school timings, particularly for classes up to the 2nd grade, proposing a start time post 9 am. This development has triggered diverse reactions from school principals in Mumbai.
To guide this initiative, the government has assembled a committee of experts tasked with formulating recommendations. The underlying principle behind this proposal is the belief that young children need ample sleep and should not be compelled to sleep early.
State School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar underscored that a decision would be made based on the committee’s findings, with a potential implementation in the upcoming academic year. The decision follows a recommendation from Governor Ramesh Bais, prompting a reevaluation of existing school timings.
Minister Kesarkar clarified that the primary focus of this initiative lies in the emerging segment of pre-primary education, encompassing nursery, junior KG, senior KG, Class 1, and Class 2.
