In a significant development for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Gujarat Titans have appointed Shubman Gill as their captain for 2024, succeeding Hardik Pandya, who decided to make a return to Mumbai Indians. This decision follows a noteworthy all-cash trade deal between the two franchises, with Gujarat Titans set to receive Rs 15 crore from Mumbai Indians, along with a substantial undisclosed transfer fee, a portion of which will be allocated to the cricketer.
Gill, a 24-year-old opener, emerged as the natural choice for captaincy after his outstanding performance in the previous season, securing the coveted ‘orange cap’ with 890 runs, second only to Virat Kohli’s all-time record of 973. Hardik Pandya, expressing his emotions on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), remarked, “This brings back so many wonderful memories. Mumbai. Wankhede. Paltan. Feels good to be back,” in response to a video illustrating his journey with Mumbai Indians.
Vikram Solanki, GT Team Director, acknowledged Pandya’s significant contribution to the team’s success over the last two seasons, where they secured one IPL championship and reached the final. Solanki quoted, “He has now expressed a desire to return to his original team Mumbai Indians. We respect his decision and wish him all the very best in his future endeavors.”
