In the face of Cyclone ‘Michaung,’ the Tamil Nadu government has taken proactive measures to address the severe weather conditions affecting the region. With the storm positioned 90 km northeast of Chennai, a red alert has been issued for north coastal Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam.

The relentless rainfall has resulted in internet disruptions and power outages across the state. Cyclone ‘Michaung’ is anticipated to move towards Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, lingering near Chennai and Puducherry on Monday, causing substantial downpours.

As a response, the Tamil Nadu government has declared the closure of all educational institutions in Chennai on Tuesday, acknowledging the potential impact of heavy rainfall. The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has canceled 60 trains within its jurisdiction, activating a Crisis Management Cell to monitor Cyclone ‘Michaung’ closely.

Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore witnessed increased activity as 33 flights from Chennai were diverted due to severe weather conditions. Chennai airport’s closure prompted 70 flight cancellations, affecting both domestic and international carriers.

Chief Minister MK Stalin, taking a hands-on approach, urged residents to stay indoors during the storm and inspected the control room to assess preparedness. The 12 Madras Unit of the Indian Army is engaged in rescue operations in Chennai’s Mugalivakkam and Manapakkam areas, addressing the impact of intense rainfall and waterlogging.

Additionally, private companies and establishments in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts have been urged by the Tamil Nadu government to facilitate work-from-home arrangements for employees on Tuesday, considering the anticipated heavy rains and potential consequences. The state remains vigilant in managing the challenges posed by Cyclone ‘Michaung,’ prioritizing safety and preparedness.
