Mumbai, known for its exuberant Diwali celebrations, is taking proactive steps to ensure public safety during the festive month. Authorities have introduced a ban on the use, sale, and flying of lanterns, as well as the sale and use of firecrackers, with the directive in effect from November 4 to December 3. The order, officially issued by the Mumbai police on November 1, reflects the pressing need to safeguard lives and public property in light of the current circumstances.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Vishal Thakur, emphasized the necessity of rigorous measures to govern activities associated with flying lanterns, including their utilization, distribution, and storage within the city. This ban has been instituted to prevent potential misuse by individuals with ill intent during this festive period, underlining a commitment to public safety.

Any breach of this order will result in legal consequences, as offenders will be subject to action under Section 188, pertaining to “Disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant.”
As the city gears up for Diwali, these measures aim to strike a balance between preserving the spirit of the festival and ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. The decision to restrict lanterns and firecrackers underscores the authorities’ commitment to celebrating Diwali responsibly, putting public safety at the forefront. Mumbai residents are encouraged to adhere to these directives to make this Diwali a secure and joyous celebration for all.
