While acknowledging the reported cases, Minister George assured the public that the situation is under control. At a recent review meeting, authorities were instructed to prioritize mosquito eradication efforts and strengthen pre-monsoon cleaning initiatives.

Although West Nile fever typically presents with symptoms such as fever and headaches, Minister George emphasized that it is not as fatal as Japanese Encephalitis. However, affected individuals are advised to seek medical attention promptly.

Originating from Culex mosquitoes, West Nile fever was first identified in Uganda in 1937, with Kerala recording its first case in 2011. Presently, 10 individuals have tested positive for the fever, with five already cured and the remainder undergoing treatment.

Minister George stressed the importance of prevention, highlighting the lack of vaccines or specific treatments for West Nile fever. Eradicating mosquitoes remains the primary method of preventing the spread of the disease, reinforcing the need for robust mosquito control measures.
