In a significant development, the defence ministry has finalized a deal worth over Rs 5,300 crore with Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), a state-run entity, for the procurement of electronic fuzes. The contract spans a period of 10 years and aims to bolster the Indian Army’s artillery capabilities.
An electronic fuze holds critical importance as an integral component in medium to heavy calibre artillery guns, playing a crucial role in providing sustained artillery firepower during military operations. The procurement of these fuzes is specifically targeted for artillery guns capable of lethal engagements across diverse terrains, including high-altitude areas along the northern borders.
The ministry emphasized that the primary objective of this project is to enhance ammunition stocks domestically, thereby reducing the dependence on imports. The deal, signed on December 15, represents a landmark agreement between the Ministry of Defence and Bharat Electronics Ltd, headquartered in Pune.
The contract, valued at Rs 5,336.25 crore, underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities and achieving self-reliance in critical defence components.
