Telangana Legislative Council Member, K Kavita, expressed her disappointment and described Union Minister Smriti Irani’s recent remarks on menstruation as “appalling ignorance.” Responding to Irani’s statement that “menstruation is a natural part of life and shouldn’t be treated as a handicap,” K Kavita emphasized that menstruation is not a choice but a biological reality for women.

Irani had expressed opposition to the idea of providing paid menstrual leave for women employees, stating that it is unnecessary as menstruation is a normal aspect of life. In response, Kavita stated, “For our struggles, our journey isn’t a consolation, it deserves a level playing field, and that’s a non-negotiable.”

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Kavita added, “Menstruation isn’t a choice; it’s a biological reality. The debate on providing paid menstrual leave has been ongoing, with advocates arguing that it recognizes the physical challenges and discomfort that many women face during menstruation. Kavita’s critique highlights the importance of acknowledging and addressing the genuine concerns and experiences of women in the workforce.
